Parents and Friends

Learning that your son or daughter is struggling with same-sex attraction or gender identity confusion brings a number of intense emotions and questions into the home. If your child communicates that they have fully adopted and embraced a gay identity – it can be an even more frightening and heartbreaking experience for unfamiliar parents. But you are not alone.

PFOX families unconditionally love their children. PFOX parents recognize our children for the wonderful young men and women they are, and we encourage you not to label children based on who they are attracted to—feelings can and do change. When the child is convinced and fully adopted a gay identity, PFOX families work to allow for differences of opinion; we do not place requirements on our children nor do they place them on us. That’s what unconditional love means—loving each other even when we do not agree.

Simply put, words on a website page cannot help you as well as a parental support group can help you. While there are lots of good advice and resources available here, our single – most important – piece of advice, and the first order of business for parents should be to get connected in a support group. You cannot –and should not – travel this road alone as a parent. There are other parents who have gone before you, who have found answers, and who have practical advice to share with you about your situation.
