“Former APA President Says Organization Controlled by Gay Rights Movement”

A former president of the American Psychological Association (APA), who also introduced the motion to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness in 1975, says that the APA has been taken over by “ultraliberals” beholden to the “gay rights movement,” who refuse to allow an open debate on reparative therapy for homosexuality.

This article appeared on LifeSiteNews.com June 6, 2012:

Dr. Nicholas Cummings was President of the APA from 1979 to 1980, and also served as a member of the organization’s Council of Representatives. He served for years as Chief of Mental Health with the Kaiser-Permanente Health Maintenance Organization, and is the author of the book “Destructive Trends in Mental Health: The Well-Intentioned Path to Harm.”

In an interview with representatives of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) in late April, Cummings said that the organization’s problems began with the rejection of the Leona Tyler Principle, which required that all public positions of the APA be supported by scientific evidence.

The APA “started changing pretty drastically by the late 1980s,” said Cummings.  “By the mid 1990s, the Leona Tyler principle was absolutely forgotten, that political stances seemed to override any scientific results. Cherry-picking results became the mode. The gay rights movement sort of captured the APA.”

Cummings says that the movement for “diversity” in the APA, which he endorsed, had resulted in a lack of diversity regarding heterosexuals.

“If I had to choose now, I would see a need to form an organization that would recruit straight white males, which are underrepresented today in the APA,” he said.

Cummings says that he personally is not in opposition to the homosexual movement, including gay “marriage,” pointing out that he was the author of the motion to strike homosexuality from the APA’s list of mental illnesses. However, he is distressed at the loss of scientific objectivity at the organization.

“The first time it came up, and I was a member of [the] Council, this would have been, oh, 1975, because I remember that that’s when I made the resolution,” Cummings said. “I made the resolution that being gay was not a mental illness, that it was characterological. And it passed the Council of Representatives. And that was the first issue that came up. I also said with that, that the APA, if it passes this resolution, will also vote to continue research that demonstrates whatever the research demonstrates. Unbiased, open research. It was never done.”

In a second, briefer interview with NARTH on the same day, Cummings recalls his own work with homosexuals who wanted to leave the gay lifestyle during his tenure at Kaiser Permanente.

“It’s a difficult therapy, and it’s not huge in terms of numbers, but yes we have seen success, and this is why the stance that ‘you can never change’—Ronald Reagan said ‘never say never’—it’s absurd. All you have to do is find one exception and it knocks down the ‘never.’ But yes, I’ve experienced more than one exception,” said Cummings.

“Admittedly we had failures. The recidivism along the way with some would be intense, but we experience the same thing with treating substance abuse and alcoholism. Falling off the wagon is part of the treatment.”

Cummings’s position as a past president of the APA and as the author of the motion to remove homosexuality from the organization’s list of mental illnesses, parallels that of Dr. Robert Spitzer, past president of the American Psychiatric Association, who led the efforts there to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness two years earlier.  Spitzer also became critical of the American Psychiatric Association in the following decades and authored a study in 2000 indicating that “highly motivated” homosexuals could be successful in altering their sexual preferences through reparative therapy.

Although Spitzer recently repudiated his study, which was published in the peer-reviewed Archives of Sexual Behavior in 2002, after years of pressure from homosexual activists, Cummings has never retracted his endorsement of the view that homosexuals can sometimes change.

Coat Hangers, Electric Shock and Other Leftist Myths

Linda Harvey, WND.com

Aconsumer fraud complaint has been filed with the Federal Trade Commission by a consortium of counselors and physicians against the deceptive practices of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and others.

Yet the same old, same old lie about counseling for unwanted same sex attractions was repeated in a recent article by Reuters. Here it is:

“Gay conversion therapy methods range from counseling, hypnosis and dating-skill training to aversive techniques that induce pain or electric shocks in response to same-sex erotic images, according to California officials…”

So is Reuters correct? Is electric shock or pain-inducing therapy commonly used on teens to “make them straight”?

NO. This claim is a fraud right out of Propaganda 101. It is doubtful even one appropriately-licensed counselor could be identified doing such therapy.

Yet once again, the fake news media peddles the lies of “LGBTQ” advocates.

The Reuters article gleefully reported the latest “victory” in this campaign. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal of a discriminatory California law banning counseling for teens who want to leave homosexual feelings behind. The high court has turned down other similar cases.

And once again, America’s youth are betrayed. Many of these teens were molested by predatory adults or older peers, causing sexual confusion that most likely would have been absent otherwise.

Such incidents are nonconsensual and often meet the legal requirement for statutory rape.

But California is cool with child sexual exploitation. It permeates their schools. Their streets embrace “pride” events with school clubs marching, even though proud pedophilia advocates are sometimes parade leaders ( Harry Hay, Larry Brinkin).

California even mandates an adult predator celebration day in public schools—Harvey Milk Day — on May 22each year.

The National Task Force on Therapy Equality filed the FTC complaint because they are fed up with the fascist tactics of HRC and SPLC. The horror of “electric shock” fits the left’s prejudices about conservatives and Christians, so when unverified “testimony” is given for bills banning such therapy, and salacious details are offered about forced conversion camps and such, Democrats nod in agreement: “We knew it all along.”

For example, a 2014 bill to ban sexual orientation change therapy proposed by Democrats in the state of Washington alleged that ice baths and shock therapy were being used, although the state’s department of health had never received any complaint along these lines.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Motherhood is precious and essential.

To all the mothers, grandmothers, future mothers and children out there, happy Mother’s Day!

Where would we be without mothers?

In this era where abortion defenders are increasingly desperate, we need to stand strong for the beauty, the power, the God-design of motherhood. It’s only a political statement because some incredibly blind people try to oppose this essential human role.

Motherhood will win because goodness and truth are undeniable.

We love all our readers and donors who are mothers or who love mothers! Let’s keep honoring and preserving the value of life in the womb and the sacrifice of those who bear and/or raise children.

I hope you all have a wonderful, well-deserved special Mother’s Day!

Press Release

“We believe that these laws and policies pose a threat to freedom of conscience and also endanger the lives of the very people that they are supposed to help.” – Regina Griggs, executive director, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays

ALEXANDRIA, VA (May 24, 2016)  President Obama’s Education and Justice Departments recently sent a letter to every school district in America ordering them to allow transgendered boys and girls access to whatever bathroom facility they wanted. The letter came with an implied threat to withhold millions of dollars in federal education funding if schools did not comply.

Obama’s Justice Department is also suing North Carolina over its “bathroom law,” which was enacted in response to a Charlotte statute allowing people to choose restrooms based not on their actual sex but on their perceived sexual identity.

In New York, the city Human Rights Commission is proposing huge fines against people who use pronouns that match people’s actual sex instead of new terms invented by “gender non-conforming people,” such as “ze” or “hir.”

The draconian trans speak measure in New York could cost “civil penalties up to $125,000 for violations, and up to $250,000 for violations that are the result of willful, wanton, or malicious conduct” if people don’t “speak the way the government tells them to speak,” said law professor Eugene Volokh.

“From President Obama to city officials, social radicals are abusing government power to enforce acceptance of transgenderism as a civil right and to punish people who disagree,” said Regina Griggs, executive director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays. “As a parents support group for people who have family and friends that struggle with homosexuality and transgender issues, we believe that these laws and policies pose a threat to freedom of conscience and also endanger the lives of the very people that they are supposed to help.

“People identifying as the opposite sex need compassion, not enabling. It is not compassionate to enact bathroom laws that promote gender confusion while denying people the help and tools to develop a healthy sexual identity that matches their biological and God-given sex.

“Increasingly, the government is putting into place oppressive policies based on the erroneous assumption that while people are “born gay,” anyone can become “gay” or “transgender” at any time in their lives.  They also deny the existence of former transgenders and ignore scientific and medical facts highlighted by Johns Hopkins University Prof. of Psychiatry Emeritus Dr. Paul McHugh, who once supported sex-change operations but now believes that real compassion means providing therapy to people with gender dysphoria. People can be helped and live happy, productive lives when they learn to love and respect their biological gender.

“The Obama administration’s intimidating edict endangers adults and children on both sides of the issue – the gender confused, by withholding facts and promoting the fiction that biology is meaningless, and children and adults who are being forced to allow opposite sex members in bathrooms, dressing rooms and locker rooms in schools and public accommodations.

“With the federal assault on common sense and parents’ rights, America is facing a massive government campaign to promote sexual confusion. As parents, we must take a stand for our nation’s children, promote healthy sexuality, and provide help for those who are conflicted.”

Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to support families and educate the public on sexual orientation,Gender Confusion and former homosexuals and transgenders.
